Worship nourishes us spiritually and connects us as Christians and Methodists. In order to make the most of our worship services, we need your help. Please read over the opportunities below, pray about them, and let us know where you can help. As always, you can call the church office or check out our calendar and Wesley News for more information. Worship Commission MemberThe Worship Commission coordinates with the minister on the church worship services. Suggestions for worship events are proposed and seasonal plans (Advent, Easter) are developed. The commission manages the details concerning communion and acolytes, ushers, greeters, banners and the altar flowers. The time required is a few hours seasonally plus time to manage worship service details. Banners The banners that grace our sanctuary are handmade by volunteers who also coordinate the changing and hanging of the banners. Each season of the liturgical calendar is represented by a different set of colorful and inspiring banners. Time varies. Acolyte Coordinator The Acolyte Coordinator recruits acolytes and conducts training for new acolytes. The coordinator establishes and manages the acolyte schedule for the worship services. Time required is about three hours twice a year. Be an Acolyte Young people, grades 5 through senior high, serve in the worship experience. The acolyte carries the light into the service, lights the altar candles and extinguishes candles at the end of the service. The acolyte may assist the minister as needed. Time required is one hour a month. Altar Steward The Altar stewards are responsible for the proper arrangement of the altar in our sanctuary for each service of worship. The Paraments are changed to correspond with the liturgical calendar. Candles are changed as needed. Time varies. Communion Stewards (1st Sunday of the Month) Volunteers set up for Communion on the first Sunday of each month. On the Saturday prior to a communion Sunday, paraments are changed to white and the elements are prepared, set out, and covered. Clean-up is handled after the second service on Sunday. Time required is approximately three hours once a month. Drama
GroupWesley presents special religious dramas appropriate to the church season during the year. Some of these are done at a special time; others are done as part of the sermon during the worship service. Volunteers perform, coordinate costumes and scenery, and direct. Time varies by activity. Flower Steward The flower stewards are responsible for placing pre-ordered flowers for the worship service. After the 11:00 AM service, the stewards make sure that the flowers are picked up or delivered to a shut-in. Time required to place flowers, plus follow-up time for delivery arrangements. Take Flowers to Shut-ins The worship service altar flowers are rearranged and volunteers take them to shut-ins in coordination with the Flower Steward. Time varies. Greeters Greeters are a very important beginning to each worship service. Couples, singles, and families all are asked to assist during the year in greeting those entering the Lord's house for worship. Thirty minutes before the worship service. Junior Church Wesley Ministries serve boys and girls between 1st grade and the 6th grade. Help with varying worship experiences and activities which takes place approximately midway through each of the Sunday morning services. Time required is one hour once a month. Lay Liturgist Lay participation during the worship services involves scripture readings, serving as communion stewards and other participation, as requested by the ministers. One Sunday a year is Laity Sunday, when members of the congregation conduct services. Time varies. Prayer Missions Pray for Missionaries–Volunteers are asked to pray for missionaries on a regular basis. Time varies by individual. Prayer Vigils Participant–Special prayer vigils are organized around a particular need. The vigils may be 24 hours or over a week-long period, taking place in the sanctuary, or at home. One to two hours during the vigil. Prayer Groups–Prayer groups are formed in response to special requests and interests. They may meet at the church or at a home. The group determines the time, length, and frequency. Special Holiday Decorators Special services held during the year (Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter) require special attention to decoration. Time varies. Help Plan Special Services At various times during the Christian year, special worship services or emphases are held. Volunteers assist with the planning and coordinating. Time varies. Ushers Ushers make sure our members and visitors receive a worship bulletin, seat those who need assistance, assist in collection of the offering, and help with any requests of the ministers. Ushers also maintain communication with the Nursery workers when needed. One or two ushers are designated to ring the church bell 15 minutes prior to each service. Time required is six hours a month, three times a year. Wedding Coordinator The wedding coordinator assists the pastor with wedding rehearsals, and manages some administrative details prior to and during weddings held at Wesley.
