Make a Joyful Noise

Organ Repair and Upgrade Project

Organ & Rose Window

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing. – Psalm 100: 1-2 KJV

The Problem: From time to time, the organ produces sounds not intended by the organist.

The Diagnosis: According to the company that has maintained our Wicks organ for many years, our organ, which was installed when the Sanctuary Wing was built in 1963, has many mechanical parts, some of which are powered by electricity. One of the tasks these electromechanical parts performs is to remember actions set by the organist to use when playing a hymn or an anthem. If the organ fails to execute any of these settings, the hymn or anthem will not be played as the organist intended.

The Remedy: As recommended by our organ tuner and approved by the Administrative Council, we are having the electromechanical parts replaced with electronic parts. The console will be updated to be compatible with the upgraded parts.

The Problem: Several pipes cannot be tuned properly.

The Diagnosis: According to the organ tuner, some pipes were made of material that has since proved to be unsuitable for pipe organs.

The Remedy: As recommended by our organ tuner and approved by the Administrative Council, the set of pipes will be replaced.

The Problem: The organ cannot produce all the “joyous noise” intended for certain hymns and anthems.

The Diagnosis: Most notably absent are trumpets, trombone, chimes, harp, and celesta.

The Remedy: The Administrative Council has approved the addition of certain voices including a herald trumpet, trumpet, trombone, chimes, harp, and celesta.
